Breast Reduction Surgery: Life-Changing Relief with Natural Results

For many women, breast reduction surgery is a medically necessary procedure that is about much more than changing their appearance. While it creates a lighter, more proportionate breast shape, its primary purpose is often to relieve chronic pain, improve function and enhance quality of life.
Every week, we meet women who have lived with the physical and emotional burden of large, heavy breasts for years. Neck pain, back pain, shoulder grooving, difficulty exercising, finding clothing that fits and self-consciousness are just some of the concerns we hear.
One comment we hear time and time again after surgery is:
"I only wish I'd done it sooner."
It is one of the most rewarding procedures we perform—not only because of the beautiful aesthetic transformation, but because of the profound improvement it can make to a patient's everyday life.
Why Do Women Choose Breast Reduction?
Breast reduction surgery is commonly sought by women experiencing:
Chronic neck, shoulder and back pain
Shoulder grooves from bra straps
Skin irritation or rashes beneath the breasts
Difficulty exercising or participating in sport
Difficulty finding comfortable clothing or bras
Poor posture
Breast asymmetry
Pendulous (significantly drooping) breasts
Reduced confidence and self-esteem
Many women have spent years trying physiotherapy, massage, supportive bras and pain medication, only to find that the underlying cause—the weight of their breasts—continues to impact their daily life.
For these women, breast reduction is not simply cosmetic. It is a procedure that can restore comfort, improve function and allow them to return to activities they have previously avoided.
A Medically Necessary Procedure
Breast reduction is recognised as a reconstructive procedure when it is performed to relieve the physical symptoms associated with large, heavy breasts.
For eligible patients, Medicare provides rebates under Item Number 45523, provided specific clinical criteria are met. Patients with the appropriate level of private health insurance may also receive benefits towards their hospital admission and theatre costs.
To access Medicare rebates:
A current referral from your GP is required.
Dr Theo Birch will perform a comprehensive assessment to determine whether you meet the Medicare criteria.
In accordance with Australian guidelines, patients undergo a minimum of two consultations prior to surgery. These appointments allow ample opportunity to discuss your symptoms, treatment goals, surgical options and recovery, ensuring you are fully informed before proceeding.
Our team will also provide a detailed quote and explain Medicare rebates, private health fund contributions and any expected out-of-pocket costs.
More Than Simply Making the Breasts Smaller
Breast reduction surgery is carefully planned to create breasts that are not only lighter, but also:
Better proportioned to your body
More symmetrical
Lifted into a more youthful position
Comfortable and functional
Natural in appearance
The procedure also addresses breast ptosis (drooping) by reshaping the breast tissue, removing excess skin and repositioning the nipple-areola complex to a more youthful position.
The result is a breast that feels lighter, looks more proportionate and better suits your body shape.
Achieving Your Desired Cup Size
One of the most common questions we are asked is:
"Can I choose my cup size?"
During your consultation, Dr Theo Birch will spend time understanding your goals and discussing your desired breast size. Every effort is made to achieve an outcome that aligns with your expectations while maintaining balance with your body proportions.
However, it is important to understand that cup size cannot be guaranteed.
The priority during breast reduction surgery is always patient safety. While Dr Birch aims to remove enough breast tissue to relieve symptoms and achieve your desired outcome, there are occasions where surgical limitations exist.
Maintaining an adequate blood supply to the nipple-areola complex is critical for healing and preserving nipple viability and sensation. In some patients, this means there may be a limit to how much tissue can be safely removed during one operation.
These considerations are discussed thoroughly during your consultation so you have realistic expectations before surgery.
Your Surgical Journey
Breast reduction surgery is performed under a general anaesthetic in an accredited private hospital.
Depending on your individual needs and the extent of surgery, the procedure may be performed as either:
A day procedure, allowing you to return home later that day, or
An overnight hospital stay, providing additional monitoring and comfort during your initial recovery.
Dr Theo Birch will recommend the most appropriate option based on your medical history, the complexity of your surgery and your personal circumstances.
Recovery: What to Expect
One of the biggest surprises for many patients is that breast reduction surgery is far more comfortable than they anticipated.
Although everyone heals differently, most women describe the discomfort as very manageable with simple pain relief.
Most patients can expect:
Approximately two weeks away from work (depending on your occupation)
Gradual return to light activities after the first few weeks
Avoidance of heavy lifting for six weeks
Return to exercise following clearance from Dr Birch
Swelling gradually settles over several months as your breasts soften and assume their final shape.
Your Post-Operative Garment
Following surgery, you will be fitted with a specialised compression garment.
This garment should generally be worn for six weeks and plays an important role in your recovery by helping to:
Support healing tissues
Reduce swelling
Improve comfort
Maintain breast shape during healing
Minimise unnecessary movement
Our team will guide you on when it can be removed and when you can transition back into regular bras.
Follow-Up Care
Your recovery continues long after your surgery, and ongoing follow-up is an important part of achieving the best possible result.
Dr Birch routinely reviews his patients at:
1 week
2 weeks
3 months
6 months
These appointments allow us to monitor healing, assess scar maturation, answer any questions and ensure your recovery is progressing as expected.
Additional reviews are always available if required, as we are committed to supporting you throughout your entire surgical journey.
A Personalised, Patient-Centred Approach
Every woman's anatomy, lifestyle and goals are unique.
Dr Theo Birch believes breast reduction surgery should never be approached with a "one-size-fits-all" philosophy. Instead, every procedure is individually planned to suit the patient sitting in front of him.
Your surgical plan is carefully tailored after considering:
Your body proportions
Existing breast size and shape
Degree of breast ptosis
Breast symmetry
Skin quality
Functional symptoms
Desired breast size
Long-term aesthetic goals
The aim is not only to reduce breast size, but to create a lighter, more youthful and proportionate breast while relieving the symptoms that have affected your daily life.

As someone who assists Dr Birch in theatre, I have the privilege of seeing the immediate transformation that breast reduction surgery can achieve.

"I wish I had done this years ago."
For many women, breast reduction surgery is genuinely life changing.
